Visitors to the U.S. Post Office in downtown Houma often smile at the sight of grand flags waving in the breeze across the street at Koerner Law Firm. The United States flag is flanked by the Louisiana flag and the flag of the French Republic, signifying Acadiana's close cultural ties to the country that influenced the development of our legal code as well as our language, cuisine, and joi de vivre.

Attorney Louis Koerner, Jr., a native of New Orleans, learned to speak French after graduating from Tulane School of Law. After beginning his own practice, Koerner opened his doors to French law students, offering opportunities for internships with his law firm. Since that time, more than 15 international law students have apprenticed with him. Most have been from France, but others journeyed here from Belgium and Switzerland. Almost six years ago, Koerner himself began a long journey, navigating the legal challenges that have prevented foreign lawyers from arguing cases in Louisiana courtrooms. Last week, Louisiana's Supreme Court ruled to allow admission to the state bar of "an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an alien otherwise authorized to work lawfully in the United States." some education requirements, including 14 semester hours of education in an American law school, will be required.

"This is a thoughtful and sensible change in the admission rules that eliminates past controversies while encouraging sufficient familiarity with Louisiana and American law and American legal institutions so that successful applicants will better integrate into the Louisiana legal community," Louisiana attorney Louis Koerner Jr. wrote on Saturday.

Koerner is an accomplished attorney, who maintains offices in both Houma and New Orleans. With more than 40 years experience in every kind of litigation, he has tried hundreds of cases throughout Louisiana and across the country, and has appeared before federal and state courts of appeal, the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States. he is a member of the Francophone Section of the Louisiana State Bar Association.
